Chapter 4: The King's Bluff
Published
A year had passed since that fateful night at the Costa Royale, but the scars it left on Leo and Iris hadn’t healed. The city had moved on, its bright neon lights casting a familiar glow on the streets, but for them, everything had changed. Vito Costa was gone, disappeared into the underworld after Leo’s victory, but his shadow still lingered. Every time they stepped outside, Leo could feel it—the weight of invisible eyes tracking his every move.
Iris had grown more cautious, her instincts sharper. They had moved to a quieter part of town, far from the glitz of the casinos and the thrum of high-stakes games. Leo still gambled, of course—he was the King of Gamblers, after all—but the thrill had dulled. Something had shifted in him after that night. Every card dealt, every bet placed felt like it carried more weight, as if Vito's threat still hung in the air, waiting for the moment to strike.
But now, after months of paranoia and vigilance, they had discovered the truth. It wasn’t Vito or his men that had been watching them. It was someone else—someone far more official.
“I can’t believe it,” Iris said, pacing the living room. The soft, amber light of their apartment did little to ease the tension hanging between them. “The FBI? They’ve been on us this whole time?”
Leo sat on the edge of the couch, rubbing his temples. “Yeah. And they’re not just watching. They want something.”
Iris stopped and turned to him, her face hard with frustration. “What could they possibly want with us? We’re not criminals.”
Leo looked up at her, his expression grave. “No, but we know one. And they want him.”
Iris’s eyes narrowed. “Vito?”
Leo nodded. “They want to use me to bring him down. They know about my ‘abilities.’ They think I can outplay him, get close to him, and deliver him to them.”
Iris sank into the chair opposite him, her face pale. “You can’t be serious. That’s insane. You saw what happened last time. Vito won’t fall for the same trick again. If you go after him—”
“I’m not saying I’m going to,” Leo interrupted, but his tone was uncertain. “I just—”
Before he could finish, there was a knock at the door. Leo and Iris exchanged a glance. They had expected this moment, but now that it had arrived, the reality of it felt more dangerous than any game they’d ever played.
Leo stood up, took a deep breath, and opened the door.
Standing there was a man in a crisp suit, a dark trench coat hanging loosely over his broad shoulders. His face was sharp, with steely blue eyes that radiated authority. He held up his badge—a silver emblem of the FBI.
“Leo,” the man said, his voice deep but not unfriendly. “Special Agent Carter. Can I come in?”
Leo hesitated, then stepped aside, allowing the agent to enter. Carter nodded briefly at Iris, who eyed him warily, before turning his full attention to Leo.
“You’ve been following me for a year,” Leo said flatly. “Why now? Why approach me now?”
Carter’s lips curled into a thin smile. “Because now we need you. Vito Costa has resurfaced. We’ve tracked his operations to the East Coast, and we’ve got intel that suggests he’s planning something big. Drugs, weapons, money laundering—you name it. We’ve got enough to indict half his organization, but we can’t get to him directly. He’s a shadow.”
Leo crossed his arms. “And you think I can make him appear?”
“You’re the only one who ever made him blink,” Carter replied, his tone matter-of-fact. “You beat him when no one else could. You’re not just some gambler, Leo. We know about your… talent. Your ability to win.”
Leo’s eyes darkened. “You don’t know anything about it.”
Carter raised a brow. “Don’t we? We’ve been watching. We’ve seen how you play, how you calculate risk like it’s second nature. And we’ve studied the games you’ve played with Tommy. You’re not just lucky. There’s something more.”
Leo’s jaw tightened. He hated how exposed he felt, like his entire life had been laid bare for the FBI to dissect. His gift—the strange, unpredictable power that had allowed him to win at the highest stakes—had always felt like his secret weapon. Now, it felt like a burden.
“You want me to go after Vito,” Leo said, his voice low, “and use my ability to do what? Win him over? Get inside his organization? You think he’s just going to let me walk back into his life?”
Carter’s eyes glinted. “You don’t need to get close to him. You just need to win a few games—draw him out. He’s obsessed with you, Leo. He’s not the kind of man who lets a loss like that go. If we dangle the right bait, he’ll come to you. And when he does, we’ll be ready.”
Iris stood up abruptly, her voice filled with fury. “You’re talking about using Leo as bait? You have no idea what Vito is capable of. He’s not just a criminal—he’s a monster.”
Carter didn’t flinch. “I’m well aware of what Vito Costa is. That’s why we need someone with the guts and the skill to face him. Someone who knows how to play at his level.”
Leo looked down, his mind swirling with possibilities. He knew how dangerous Vito was. The man played games not just with money but with lives. But there was a part of Leo—a small, dangerous part—that wanted to confront him again. Not out of revenge, but out of a need to finish what had started that night at Costa Royale. This wasn’t about the FBI or even about justice. This was about proving, once and for all, that no one—not even Vito—could control him.
Leo raised his head, his eyes meeting Carter’s. “What’s the plan?”
Iris gasped, stepping forward. “Leo, no! You can’t—”
“I have to, Iris,” Leo said, his voice quiet but firm. “Vito’s not going to stop. He’s still out there, and he’s still watching. This is the only way.”
Carter stepped forward, nodding approvingly. “We have a high-stakes poker tournament coming up in Atlantic City. We’ve gotten word that some of Vito’s top lieutenants will be there. You’ll play, win, and make enough noise to get his attention. From there, we’ll make our move.”
Leo let out a breath. The game was starting again, but this time, the stakes weren’t just about money or pride. They were about survival.
“I’ll do it,” he said finally, his eyes flickering with determination. “But I have one condition.”
Carter crossed his arms. “Name it.”
Leo glanced at Iris before speaking. “Iris stays safe. No matter what happens, she’s protected.”
Carter nodded, though there was a slight hesitation. “We can make that happen.”
Leo wasn’t sure if he believed the agent, but for now, it was the only choice he had. The cards were being dealt again, and this time, the game wasn’t just about beating Vito.
It was about outplaying everyone.
