Chapter 2: The Ace of Shadows, Black Clover.

The streets of the city hummed with their usual electric chaos, but tonight the neon lights seemed dimmer, casting long, ominous shadows over Leo’s domain. Ever since his fateful game with Iris, something had shifted in the air. The thrill of gambling had taken a backseat to something deeper—something dangerous. He had won many games since that night, but the stakes now felt different. They weren’t just about money anymore. They were about life. About loyalty.
Leo stood at the edge of the rooftop casino he called home, staring at the skyline when the door behind him swung open. Iris stepped out, her black dress flowing in the evening breeze. She had a look on her face that he recognized instantly. Trouble.
"We need to talk," she said, her voice tight.
Leo's heart skipped a beat. "What is it?"
“It's my godfather. Vito Costa. He’s in town.”
The name sent a chill through Leo’s spine. Vito Costa wasn’t just anyone. He was the shadow behind the city’s crime syndicate, a Mob boss known as the black clover, with iron control over every illegal activity from smuggling to underground gambling. To the outside world, he was the suave, successful owner of Costa Royale, the grandest casino in the city. But to those who knew better, he was a man you never crossed.
Vito also happened to be Iris's godfather.
"Iris," Leo began, "what does he want with us?"
Iris’s gaze dropped, and she hesitated. “He knows about us—about you, specifically. He’s… concerned.”
Leo frowned. “Concerned?”
“He doesn’t like the attention you've been drawing. People say you’re unstoppable, unbeatable at the tables. He feels... threatened. And he wants you to take a dive in the upcoming World Poker Invitational.”
Leo crossed his arms, anger and disbelief swirling in his chest. "You want me to lose on purpose? At the biggest tournament of my career?"
Iris stepped closer, grabbing his hand. “Leo, this isn't just about the tournament. He’s not asking. He's blackmailing me.”
Leo froze. "What do you mean?"
Her eyes were hard as steel, but beneath the surface, Leo saw the fear. “He knows I’ve been helping you—teaching you tricks of the trade. He thinks I'm too close. Vito said if you don’t lose the final round, he’ll kill me. He already has his men watching.”
The world around Leo seemed to tilt, his breath coming in shallow waves. His luck, his gift—it had always been a weapon in his hands. But now it felt like a curse, and the weight of it pressed down on him like never before.
“When?” Leo asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
“The finals are tomorrow night,” Iris replied, her voice faltering. “Vito will be there. He expects you to throw the match when it matters most. If you don’t... I don’t know what he’ll do.”
Leo felt the gravity of the situation closing in, like the walls of a poker table boxing him in. He had always played the game with total control, but this—this was different. This was playing for a life, and not his own.
“What if I don’t lose?” Leo asked, his mind racing with possibilities. “There’s always a way out. We could—”
“No.” Iris shook her head firmly. “Vito has eyes everywhere. If you win, they’ll shoot me on the spot. This isn't just a game for him. It's a statement of power.”
Leo clenched his fists. “This isn’t right. I won’t let him control you—or me. There has to be something we can do.”
A grim silence settled between them before Iris spoke again. "There’s more, Leo. I didn’t want to tell you this, but... Vito was the one who set up that game where you first discovered your ‘gift.’ He knew about your abilities long before you did."
Leo's blood ran cold. “What?”
Iris nodded. “He’s been watching you ever since, waiting for the right time to use you. All this time, he’s had his hand in the game.”
Leo’s mind reeled. Vito Costa—the man who controlled everything from the shadows, the man who made fortunes vanish and rivals disappear—had been manipulating him from the beginning. Every game, every bet, had been part of his plan. And now, the final piece had fallen into place.
“I won’t be his puppet,” Leo said, his voice dark with resolve. “I’ll find a way to win—and keep you safe.”
Iris smiled sadly, though her eyes were still filled with worry. “I trust you, Leo. But Vito... he always has an ace up his sleeve.”
The night of the World Poker Invitational arrived, the air thick with tension. The ballroom of Costa Royale was packed with high-rollers, all drawn by the allure of the tournament’s massive prize pool. At the head of the room, Vito Costa sat in a private booth, his eyes cold and calculating as they locked onto Leo. A faint smile played at his lips—a predator enjoying the sight of his prey walking into a trap.
Leo felt the weight of Vito’s gaze but ignored it. He had one goal: win the tournament without losing Iris. As he sat at the table, the familiar rush of energy filled him. His gift—his cursed blessing—was ready, but this time, it wasn’t about money. It was about survival.
As the cards were dealt, Leo’s mind raced. He had to lose, but not too soon. He needed to keep Vito off balance, make him think everything was going according to plan. But he couldn’t afford to slip—not once. Iris’s life hung in the balance.
The game unfolded like a dance, each move precise, each bluff calculated. Leo’s opponents fell one by one, but his real enemy sat outside the game, watching with cold detachment.
Finally, it was down to the last hand. Leo’s pulse pounded as the final cards were dealt. His opponent, a seasoned pro, had a look of quiet confidence.
Leo glanced at his hand—aces. He could win, easily.
But that wasn’t the plan.
Across the room, Vito's cold eyes bore into him. Iris stood nearby, pale and tense, her fate tied to the outcome of this one hand.
Leo took a deep breath, the weight of the decision crashing down on him. Should he throw the game? Or risk everything for a slim chance to beat the man who had orchestrated his entire life?
The final card was about to be played. And in that moment, Leo realized: This wasn’t just about winning anymore.
It was about surviving.
